In January 2006, I was doing some work in the Deh Cho and Sahtu regions of the Mackenzie Valley and needed to travel the winter road between Fort Simpson and Norman Wells, NWT.

I had arranged a ride with a local surveyor named Ferdinand who was verifying the GPS cordinates of lakes and weather stations along the route. We left Fort Simpson on a grey-skied Friday in good spirits.
